PSA’s SIGNIFICANT MILESTONES

1819 Arrival of Sir Stamford Raffles. Foundation of Temasek and birth of the Singapore port.
1964 Port of Singapore Authority formed as a statutory board.
1967

Port Officers’ Union is formed.

1971

Takes over British Naval Base at Sembawang and establishes Sembawang Wharves.

1972

Arrival of M.V. Nihon, 23 June. Commences operations at first container berth at Tanjong Pagar Terminal.

1974

Pasir Panjang Wharves is developed on reclaimed land.

1981

Achieves one million TEUs in single year for first time.

1982

Becomes world’s busiest port by tonnage.

1984

Introduces the first version of PORTNET, a one-stop 24-hour paperless electronic link with local port and shipping community.

1988 Implements CITOS®, a proprietary Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) system that co-ordinates and integrates PSA’s entire port operations.

1990 Passes 5 million TEUs a year mark and becomes world’s largest container port.
  Commissions first berth at Brani Terminal.
1991 Keppel Terminal starts operation.
  Establishes Singapore Port Institute.
1994 Achieves 10 million TEUs in single year.
  Keppel Distripark starts operations.
1996 Establishes first overseas project, Dalian Container Terminal, in China.
  Singapore Port Workers’ Union celebrates its 50th anniversary.
1997 PSA corporatises and is named PSA Corporation Limited.
  Pasir Panjang Terminal starts operations.
1998 Becomes first terminal operator to handle 100 million containers since the start of container operations.
  Invests in container terminals in Italy, India and Fuzhou, China.
1999 Invests in a container terminal at Sines, Portugal.

2000 Officially opens Pasir Panjang Terminal.
  Invests in container terminals in Brunei and South Korea.
2001 Invests in container terminals in Guangzhou, China and Belgium.
  Signs long-term Virtual Terminal Agreement with COSCO Container Lines.
2002 Celebrates 30 years of containerisation.
  Acquires majority stakes in Hesse-Noord Natie, a Belgian port management and operations company.
2003 Officially launches COSCO-PSA Terminal at Pasir Panjang Terminal.
  Signs first Appropriated Berth Agreement with Wallenius Wilhelmsen at Pasir Panjang Wharves.
2005 Achieves 20 million TEUs in a single year.
  Enters into a Joint Venture with Mediterranean Shipping Company (MSC) to jointly manage and operate a container terminal for MSC at Pasir Panjang Terminal.
2006

MSC-PSA Asia Terminal Pte Ltd (MPAT) officially opens.

  EMMA MÆRSK, the world's largest containership with a declared capacity of 11,000 TEUs, calls at Pasir Panjang Terminal.
2007 Enters into a joint venture with NYK and K Line to operate Singapore's first dedicated car terminal called Asia Automobile Terminal (Singapore) at Pasir Panjang Terminal.
2008 Enters into a joint venture with PIL to operate a dedicated container terminal called PIL-PSA Singapore Terminal at Keppel Terminal.
